The Waterfront was set up by the city council after an extensive local campaign. After running 4 years the expertise of the Union Of UEA Students was brought in to take over the running of the venue.

Since taking over in 1993, the venue- located in the centre of the city and open to all, has grown to be one of the finest live music venues and home of alternative clubbing in the Eastern region. With a capacity of 700 the Waterfront covers all shows too big for the local Arts Centre and those smaller than parent venue, UEA, at 1550 capacity.

The fact there is a combined booking for The Waterfront and UEA gives a greater flexibility in programming and being able to move shows as bands grow quickly. The past 4 years have seen an increase in the number of live shows at The Waterfront, in excess of 100 per year and growing. The Waterfront also boasts one of the finest in-house lighting rigs for its size and hires the best PA system in the locality.
